The temperomandibular joint, or TMJ, is located in the skull,
under the skin and muscle, in front of the ear. It is what
facilitates talking and chewing. Grinding or clenching of
the teeth, also known as bruxism, can cause severe damage
to the gums, the TMJ and the teeth. Problems with the teeth
can affect the TMJ and problems with the TMJ can affect the
teeth. Any pain in the head or neck region could be the result
of TMD or temperomandibular disorder. If you are having headaches
or muscle pain, Dr. Urban can perform a thorough exam of your
temperomandibular joint and how it relates to your teeth.
Many TMD cases can be effectively treated with a minimally
invasive mouthguard, which helps to correct the bite and align
the jaw properly, thus providing tremendous relief to the
patient, while protecting the teeth and the TMJ.
