While some people may get lucky and escape cavities, despite
their sloppy oral hygiene, almost no one escapes gum disease.
Aside from some unusual occurrences of gum disease in children,
most people can avoid gum disease as children, even if they
have poor dental hygiene. That luck usually runs out, however,
and unless you are cleaning all of the bacteria, on the teeth
surfaces, you will be susceptible to gum disease.
As a culture, we are erroneously associate a cavity free
mouth with a healthy mouth. It is important to understand
that while the teeth are susceptible to decay, what holds
the teeth in our mouths is also susceptible to bacterial infection.
Those structures that support the teeth are collectively called
the periodontium. The teeth are surrounded by tissue and bone.
