WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR FIRST
VISIT:
The first visit is an opportunity for you and Dr. Urban to
get to know each other as well as share your expectations.
The exam portion is quite simple. After an exam of the neck
and lymph nodes of the head, the doctor performs an oral cancer
screening. She will then analyze your temperomandibular joint
(TMJ) and rule out any irregularities.
The rest of the exam centers on two issues:
The teeth: The bacteria that attack the teeth and cause
cavities are different than those that affect the gums and
supportive structure of the teeth. The teeth are susceptible
to decay, which occurs when the cavity bacteria are fed
sugar.
The structures that support the teeth (gums and bone). Having
healthy cavity free teeth does not make one exempt from
having gum problems. The bacteria involved in gum disease,
or periodontal disease, are different than those involved
in cavities, which affect the teeth proper. The gum bacteria
feed on proteins. They typically do not like oxygen, which
makes them that much harder to access-you have to purposefully
look for them in the hard to reach places(back teeth, between
the teeth, cuff of skin around each tooth).
Once this information is gathered, we discuss the results.
If treatment is needed, there are almost always different
options available. You will always be informed of all of your
options and given the opportunity to ask questions.
The final and best part of the appointment is learning the
proper way to brush your teeth and access those hard to reach
places. Below you will find a written description of the procedure,
but understand the best way to understand it is to see it.
Aside from fixing immediate problems and getting patients
back on track, dentistry is almost entirely about prevention.
We want to empower you to take care of your mouth yourself.
